General Studies Program at Montgomery College
The General Studies (GS) Program at Montgomery College allows students to focus their
studies in one of three core areas or they can do a combination of two. Students who
are unsure of their path can use Start Here to determine which General Studies core area is right for them.
General Studies provides opportunities for students to complete requirements towards
an associate’s degree while preparing for transfer to a four-year institution. Each
core area offers focus options for transfer majors and certificates to guide their
studies at MC.
While students may tailor course selections and course modalities to fit their individual
needs, the General Studies associate’s degree may also be completed as a fully online
degree or a Z-degree. The fully online degree provides students flexibility to fit
their academic career into their busy schedules by opting for distance learning courses
to fulfill degree requirements. The Z-degree can save students money by selecting
courses with the Z-course designation as there is no cost for textbooks in Z-courses.
