Assessment and Testing Centers

The Assessment and Testing Centers unit welcomes you! We offer information to students and faculty on a variety of testing services. The Centers provide a secure and accessible environment for testing services. Submitting an exam request and completing an academic exam can be stressful. The materials and the resources available on this page should provide guidance to complete these tasks successfully.

Our contact information is available at the bottom of this page for students and faculty. You can contact us live via Zoom office hours, via email or phone, or by visiting one of the campus centers.

Academic Testing

This section is for faculty and currently enrolled students looking for assistance with in-person and online testing services. The Centers work closely with Disability Support Services to provide most required testing accommodations.

Students with approved accommodations should also review this section to complete class exams.

Academic Testing

What follows are information and resources for faculty and enrolled students on a variety of testing services: in-person testing services, online testing services, and testing with accommodations for students with approved disabilities.

Faculty and students should carefully review all information and resources on` this page. If you have any questions about testing services, please contact us during Zoom office hours, via email at AcademicTesting@montgomerycollege.edu, or by visiting one of the centers. Our contact information is available at the bottom of this page.

Students with Documented Disabilities

If you are a student who needs accommodations related to your disability, you should contact Disability Support Services before scheduling an exam.

Before scheduling an appointment for testing, students must talk to their professor to ensure all approved accommodations have been included in the test request.

Testing Services Platforms

Assessment and Testing Centers provide in-person and online testing services. We use the RegisterBlast platform to process in-person testing. For online testing services, faculty and students will utilize the ProctorU platform. Both platforms are integrated with Blackboard. Faculty will decide which format works best for their students. Which platform is better for you? To help you decide, please review this document table comparing both formats.

To help you decide, please review this document comparing both formats (PDF, Get Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader - Link opens in new window) .

Testing Services Options

Assessment and Testing Centers assist faculty and students with in-person and on-line testing services. For those interested in testing at one of our centers during regular hours, please review the information under In-Person Testing Services below. For those considering online proctoring services, please review the information in the second accordion: Online Testing Services.

In-Person Testing Services

Assessment & Testing Centers will use the RegisterBlast platform for in-person academic testing services. This platform is integrated with Blackboard. Faculty will submit exam requests through their course dashboard in Blackboard.

In-person testing will be available during regular hours of operations Monday through Friday by appointment only. Students will use their course dashboard in Blackboard to access RegisterBlast and schedule an appointment to take their exam at one of the campus testing centers.

Assessment & Testing Centers offer a variety of testing services. To support equitable use of test center resources and space, we ask faculty and students to follow these policies:

  • Priority is given to DSS students with approved accommodations and students who do not have access to reliable technical resources.
  • Testing labs are considered reduced distraction spaces. Labs are quiet, computer stations have dividers, and if needed, assessment staff can provide ear plugs or noise-cancelling headsets.
  • Access to private rooms is limited. We use a block schedule to maximize availability. DSS exams with accommodations (I.e., double-time) must be no longer than 4 hours, particularly during peak academic testing periods such as midterms and final exams.
  • Eating and drinking is not allowed in the testing labs. Before testing date, students must have approved accommodations to access food or drinks during testing.
  • External devices including but not limited to laptops, iPods, smartphones, smart watches, are not allowed in the testing lab.
  • Centers cannot support test requests for entire classes. Centers can support no more than ten (10) non-DSS students per class section, as necessary.
  • Faculty submitting test requests for multiple classes will need to make exam available at all three campuses and provide a test range of 2-3 days. Encourage students to test at any campus during any available date and time.
  • Faculty submitting test requests for multiple classes will need to make exam available at all three campuses and provide a test range of 2-3 days. Students should avoid scheduling on one campus, on the same day and time.
  • Test materials must be in digital format. Blackboard exams are preferred. Centers have lockdown tools for Blackboard and ALEKS exams. LanSchool is also used for exams in external platforms. Digital materials facilitate the retrieval process for students and faculty.

In the next sections, RegisterBlast: Students and RegisterBlast: Faculty, there is specific information and resources about RegisterBlast and in-person testing:

By scheduling an in-person appointment, students will agree to:

  • Testing centers are public, enclosed spaces. We strongly encourage students experiencing any respiratory symptoms, such as coughing or sneezing, to wear a mask while completing their academic exam.
  • Stay home if you are sick and contact your professor for an extension and reschedule your exam.
  • Bring a valid photo ID, such as an MC photo ID, state-issued driver’s license, or a passport. No digital, cell phone images or photocopies of identifications are accepted for testing. If you do not have your ID, you will be required to reschedule your appointment.
  • Store all electronic devices and any personal items in a secure locker prior to testing. These items are not allowed in the testing room. An assessment staff member will provide you with a key and a locker for your personal belongings.
  • Avoid bringing children or guests to your test appointment. They cannot enter the testing lab. Children are not allowed to be unattended outside of the testing center or any other area of the college.
  • Abide by the Montgomery College Student Code of Conduct (PDF, Get Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader - Link opens in new window)
  • Test materials are secured and confidential. Any attempt to record, share and/or discuss test information outside the testing center will be reported to your professor for review.
  • All tests will be stopped, and all test materials will be collected, 15 minutes before the testing center’s closing time.
  • Students with documented and approved accommodations must talk to their professors about their test accommodations before exam date. Your professor must record your authorized accommodations when they submit their exam request.
  • Students with approved accommodations must arrive 15 minutes earlier to review and confirm all accommodations before testing.

Students should review these RegisterBlast videos to learn about specific features in the platform:

RegisterBlast is a web-based application that is used to manage faculty test requests and student appointments for in-person testing services. Faculty will link each campus to RegisterBlast once a semester for every course taught. After RegisterBlast is added to their course dashboard, faculty will be able to submit their test requests. Students will use the link to schedule an in-person appointment on any campus.

Assessment and Testing Center staff will receive, review and approve faculty's test requests during regular hours of operation. To support equitable use of test center resources and space, priority is given to DSS students with approved accommodations and students who have issues accessing technical resources. Centers can support no more than ten (10) non-DSS students per class section, as necessary. Faculty should read this document (PDF, Get Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader - Link opens in new window) to learn about the centers’ policies for academic testing

Once the test request is approved, students can schedule their appointments through their course dashboard in Blackboard. During peak academic testing periods, please allow 48 hours for requests to be approved.

For students with approved accommodations, faculty must include in their test request the student(s) name, M# and all approved accommodations. Students with approved accommodations will not be able to schedule their exam appointments until accommodations are process and confirmed by the DSS office and/or faculty.

Faculty can edit their test requests in RegisterBlast to add missing accommodations, test instructions or materials. Faculty may also email us their revisions at  AcademicTesting@montgomerycollege.edu as soon as possible.

Faculty should review these RegisterBlast videos to learn about specific features in the platform.

RegisterBlast Training Sessions

Online Testing Services

Assessment & Testing Centers will begin using ProctorU for online academic testing in Spring 2025. ProctorU is an online remote proctoring tool integrated with Blackboard. Faculty and students will interact directly with ProctorU to submit test materials, schedule appointments, review test reports and session recordings. ProctorU is free to all faculty and students

Faculty teaching SRT, hybrid, blended, evening or weekend courses should consider this tool. The platform can provide services to large number of students, offers flexible appointments to meet student’s hectic work and school schedules, including late evenings and weekends. ProctorU also provides 24/7 technical support.

This platform provides limited options for DSS accommodations. Students with unique accommodations should work with the DSS office and Assessment and Testing Centers to program an exam session

In the next section, ProctorU Students and ProctorU: Faculty, there is specific information and resources about ProctorU and online proctoring.

By scheduling an online appointment, MC students will agree to abide by the Montgomery College Student Code of Conduct (PDF, Get Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader - Link opens in new window) and to follow these testing requirements:

Whether you have a live proctor or not does not change what is allowed during your exam.

  • If you have a live proctor, he or she may intervene upon any actions or behaviors that are not allowed.
  • If you do not have a live proctor, your actions and behaviors are being monitored by the ProctorU Platform and will be reviewed by a professional proctor and/or your instructor.

Actions and behaviors that will be flagged during an exam:

  • Talking aloud: Unless you have an approved accommodation, talking or whispering aloud during the exam is not permitted.
  • Being out of camera view: Your face, chin to forehead, needs to be in the camera view at all times.
  • Anyone entering your testing area: You may not have anyone else in your testing location with you.
  • Anyone talking to you while you are in your testing area: Additional noises, including other people talking to you, while you’re in your exam are not allowed.
  • Looking off-screen: If you are not allowed any materials, your eyes should stay on the screen at all times while testing.
  • Utilizing materials that are not allowed: You are only allowed the materials your instructor allows.
  • Taking pictures or screenshots of the exam: Taking pictures while in your exam, including screenshots, is not permitted. If you’re on a Mac and have a live human proctored launch, your proctor will even turn off the ability to use your keyboard screenshot hotkeys.
  • Copying and pasting any elements of the exam: In most cases, ProctorU will not allow you to copy and paste any content from your exam. Regardless of whether you can or cannot perform this function, ProctorU will capture all events of copy and paste that occur
  • Utilizing a virtual machine: Virtual machines can be detected through the pre-exam system check and are not permitted.
  • Utilizing a secondary monitor: You are only allowed to use one monitor attached to one computer during your exam.
  • Your instructor may specify additional actions/behaviors that are not permitted during your exam. These actions will be explained to you during the portion of the exam launch process when you must agree to the exam rules.
  • To ensure security across exams, there are some types of locations that you will not be permitted to test from (unless your instructor has provided ProctorU with an accommodation request):
    • Bathroom/restroom
    • Floor
    • Public areas with other individuals like Coffee Shops
    • Outdoors/parks
    • Bed
    • Sofa
    • Automobile
    • A room with a clear glass wall
  • You should be seated at a hard surface like a desk or table, and preferably with your back to the main room entrance. Standing desks will not be permitted.
  • Scan of the testing area. This is a test security step to ensure there is nothing in the room that could interrupt or jeopardize the integrity of the test session.

IDENTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

The following items will be required to complete your exam.

  • A printed copy of your booking confirmation email.
  • Valid non-expired government-issued photo ID with signature (e.g., driver’s license, passport, etc.)
  • A current Montgomery College Student ID

    •  Debit/Credit cards/Checks
    • Photo or photocopy of IDs will not be accepted
  •  Students must notify their professor about any physical ID, private space, or room scan issues before the session begins. Faculty can write instructions to the online proctor regarding alternate solutions. Online proctors may suspend the test session if no alternative solutions have been provided by the faculty.
  • Students with approved accommodations must talk to their professors about their test accommodations before exam date. Your professor will confirm that your test accommodations have been included in the exam request.

Students should review these ProctorU materials to learn about specific features in the platform:

ProctorU offers automated and live proctoring modalities. For technical issues, faculty should contact our ProctorU faculty representative. Assesment staff can provide this information.

For technical issues with Blackboard, faculty should send a ticket to IT: itservicedesk@montgomerycollege.edu

During an exam session, students should use the tech support available during the session. If the exam session is over, students should email their professor for assistance.

Students with Documented Disabilities

ProctorU can accommodation some DSS accommodations such as double-time. Here is a video with instructions on how to complete this request: Requesting Test Taker Accommodations. ProctorU also has this page to submit accommodations requests Accommodations Request Form

Disability and Support Services provides guidance on approved accommodations: DSS Faculty/Staff Guidelines.

Students with approved accommodations that require alternate testing formats should consider taking their exams at an Assessment and Testing Center.
