Grade Point Average and Academic Standing

Grade Point Average (GPA)

GPA is the standard measure for determining overall academic standing. Montgomery College, like almost all US institutions, uses the scale A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F=0. No other grades (Audit or Withdraw, for example) are included in computing the GPA. If the same class is taken more than once, the most recent attempt is used in the GPA calculation.

How GPA is calculated?

Grade points for each course are multiplied by the number of credits assigned to that course, these values are summed, and that total is finally divided by the total number of credits for these courses to arrive at the GPA. Students may use MC’s GPA calculator to estimate their GPA. http://appserv.montgomerycollege.edu/edu/gpacalculator/

What is a good GPA?

Generally speaking the higher the GPA the better! At MC you cannot graduate unless you have at least a 2.0. If you plan to transfer to another institution, you should at least have a 2.5. Many selective schools and programs within schools (UMD’s Limited Enrollment Programs for example) require above a 3.0.

Academic Standing

There are four Academic Standing categories at MC:

  • Good Academic Standing is when a student has a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Academic Alert is when has a cumulative GPA below 2.0 and is not on academic restriction or suspension. Students on academic alert should seek assistance from counselors and advisors and use the resources on this page to improve their GPA.
  • Academic Restriction – Students who have accumulated at least 12 Grade Point Average (GPA) hours with a cumulative GPA below 1.75 will be placed on academic restriction. Such students will have a registration hold and must consult with a counselor for review of all course registrations. Such students are limited to enrollment in up to two college-level courses or up to six hours per semester.  The academic restriction status will be removed when the student achieves a cumulative GPA of 1.75 or higher.
  • Academic Suspension – Students who have accumulated at least 30 Grade Point Average (GPA) hours and whose GPA falls below 1.25 will be placed on academic suspension. Such students are prohibited from enrolling in college-level courses at Montgomery College for an entire fall or spring semester. The academic suspension status will be removed when the student achieves a cumulative GPA of 1.25 or higher. Students who return from a period of suspension will have their academic standing updated to academic restriction and will be subject to the guidelines of AR 7.3 – Academic Restriction.  Students may appeal academic suspension to the Dean of Student Affairs.
