Gender Equity Micro-Credential

The Women’s and Gender Studies Program (WGSP) invites all MC employees and students to earn the Gender Equity Badge – a micro credential that will connect academic knowledge with social activism focused on gender equity and intersectionality. This badge is an opportunity to deepen knowledge about social constructions and the ways they influence various aspects of life and society as a whole.
 
Through interactive workshops and discussions and independent activities and reflections, participants will gain important background information and resources to better understand how gender constructions intersect with other identities and impact us as individuals and as a society. They will also analyze how social movements can operate effectively and how to apply this knowledge in daily interactions and communications. Successful completion of the badge requires submitting a portfolio of activity materials to be assessed and evaluated using the Gender Equity Badge Rubric. Please consult with the Collegewide Coordinator of Women’s and Gender Studies, Dr. Leah Sneider, to prepare and submit your portfolio for assessment.
 
This program is open to all MC faculty, staff, and students.
  
Participants may attend any of the following WGSP events this Fall 2024 to contribute towards their Gender Equity Badge points. More event details coming soon!

  • Workshop: Equitable Communication Skills: Exploring Gender and Communication in the Workplace (Thurs. Aug. 29th 9 am; staff and faculty only; register herenew window)
  • "LGBTQ+ Student Experiences Survey Results and Recommendations to Increase Support for LGBTQ+ Students at MC." (Sept. 11th 11-12 via zoom link herenew window)
  • “Mexico’s First Female President: A Conversation with News Producer for Latin America, Mercedes Vargas-Lugo.” Moderated by Dr. Lucy Grinnell (Sept. 23rd 11-12:30 SC 301 or via zoom link herenew window)
  • “What’s Gender Got to Do With It: The Role of Gender in Electoral Politics” (Oct. 8th 11-12:15, TPSS CM 211)
  • Student Empowerment Resource Fair (Oct. 16th 11-1 on RV campus center green space; contact Dr. Leah Sneider if you would like to host a resource table or activity)
  • "Crazy Cat Ladies, Midwestern Dads, and Superheroes: Gender and Gender Ideology in Political Campaign Memes" (Oct. 17th 1-2 pm GT room TBD)
  • Safe Zone training
  • Any other WGSP event (watch for details!)

By completing the Gender Equity Badge, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze the ways that systems of dominance, such as sexism and racism, have functioned, have changed, and how they continue to change. 
  • Demonstrate a systematic knowledge of the history of women's and/or LGBTQIA movements and of multidisciplinary scholarship about women, sexuality, and gender.
  • Describe how the application of a new "Women's Studies" gender lens has challenged traditional historical, cultural, and epistemological assumptions. 
  • Explain why gender difference is fundamental to the construction of identity and the organization of human relations. 
  • Evaluate women's and/or LGBTQIA folks’ political, intellectual and cultural contributions in various realms (including literature, the visual arts, and music) on local, national and global levels. 
  • Recognize how an awareness of women's and/or LGBTQIA issues, history, and roles in society may positively affect the futures of transfer/graduate students (in all disciplines) and as professionals (in all professions). 
  • Form judgments about the significance of gender diversity and gender equity in local, national, and global arenas. 

Participants can take a Women’s and Gender Studies course, attend WGSP events, and/or complete a combination of the following general activities that can be documented and submitted for assessment to earn the badge. The activity can be instructor-created or participant-created and is fairly open in design but will be assessed via the above outcomes and gender equity badge rubric. Please discuss and coordinate your plans with any Coordinator for Women’s and Gender Studies. Here are some examples of activities in which participants can engage to submit for the badge:

  • Museum/Exhibit/Festival/Performance/Event Report & Analysis
  • Research paper with Monologue/Presentation or Performance
  • Media & Advertising Project
  • Current Events Project
  • Public Education Project (attend, create and/or lead/facilitate)
  • Group Discussions (attend, create, and/or lead/facilitate)
  • Social Activism engagement and reflection
  • Interviews/Oral Histories
  • Service Work and reflection
  • Safe Zone Training and reflection
