Teaching Philosophy

I believe the purpose of being an art professor is to empower my students by helping them develop the skills that will allow them to grow their own artistic voice and to facilitate their artistic growth and maturation. I do this by not only teaching technical skills (slip casting, hand-building, etc.), but also by developing their awareness of the intellectual processes that play a role in every artist’s life: the importance of inquiry, reflection, flexibility, and engagement. By guiding my students through technique and process simultaneously, I help them refine the tools with which they will pursue their own artistic endeavors independently.
