Mr. Norman R. Augustine

Mr. Norman R. Augustine is retired chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation. Prior to joining Martin Marietta, he served as both assistant secretary and under secretary of the US Department of the Army. He also was a professor at Princeton University, his alma mater.

He served on the boards of Black & Decker (now Stanley Black & Decker), Procter & Gamble, and ConocoPhillips. Mr. Augustine was chairman and principal officer of the American Red Cross for nine years, chairman of the National Academy of Engineering, president and chairman of the Association of the United States Army, chairman of the Aerospace Industries Association, president of the Boy Scouts of America, and chairman of the Defense Science Board. He is a trustee emeritus of Johns Hopkins University, a former member of the Board of Trustees of Princeton University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is a regent of the University System of Maryland.

He was among several individuals who testified to Congress regarding the National Academies’ report, released on October 12, 2005, entitled Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future. Mr. Augustine chaired the National Academies’ panel that conducted the study, which Congress requested. The report recommends ways to strengthen research and education in science and technology.

Among Mr. Augustine’s many honors are the National Medal of Technology from the President of the United States, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Distinguished Public Service Award, and the US Department of Defense’s highest civilian decoration, the Distinguished Service Medal, given to him five times. Who’s Who in America and the Library of Congress honored him as one of Fifty Great Americans on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Who’s Who. He is an elected member of the American Philosophical Society, the National Academy of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Explorers Club, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Beta Kappa, and Sigma Xi.

Mr. Augustine is co-author of The Defense Revolution and Shakespeare in Charge, and author of Augustine’s Laws (printed in four languages) and Augustine’s Travels. Mr. Augustine graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in aeronautical engineering. He holds 29 honorary degrees.
