2022 Honorary Degree Recipient
J. Stephen McAuliffe III, Esq.
Principal, Miles & Stockbridge
J. Stephen McAuliffe III, Esq., is a principal with Miles & Stockbridge. He was formerly a law clerk for the Honorable William C. Miller of the Montgomery County Circuit Court and an assistant county attorney for Montgomery County. Mr. McAuliffe’s practice is in general civil litigation with an emphasis in commercial litigation. He has extensive experience in the Trial and Appellate Courts of Maryland and the District of Columbia. Additionally, he acts as outside general counsel for a diverse group of businesses based in Montgomery County, including large, publicly traded corporations.
Mr. McAuliffe joined the Montgomery College Foundation Board of Directors in 2002. In 2021, he was elected to serve a two-year term as chair of the foundation. He also serves as chair of the Executive Committee and is a member of the Strategic Planning Committee. In addition to the time and guidance he provides as board chair, he and his wife, Karyn, are generous donors, supporting the Honorable James Stephen McAuliffe Jr. Endowed Scholarship. In 2021, Mr. and Mrs. McAuliffe also established a Presidential Scholars Program scholarship in honor of their friend, Greg Wims. Mr. McAuliffe was also very influential in the College receiving a very generous gift from the Rockville Academy in support of the Presidential Scholars Program.
In addition to providing guidance as a Montgomery College Foundation board member, Mr. McAuliffe has provided pro bono legal services through his law firm on behalf of a Montgomery College student whose parents experienced a tragic family situation. In recognition of his service on behalf of the College and its students, the College recognized him with a Service Award to Community Citizens in 2020.
Mr. McAuliffe’s father, James S. McAuliffe Jr. ’51, and his uncle, John F. McAuliffe ’52, both Montgomery County judges, attended Montgomery College. It is through their association with Montgomery College that Mr. McAuliffe became actively engaged in supporting the College through his time, guidance, and philanthropy.
In addition to volunteering with the Montgomery College Foundation and Rockville Academy, Mr. McAuliffe also lends his time, energy, and counsel as a volunteer with the Montgomery County Chapter of Best Buddies, which he founded and for whom he was board chair, and where he remains a board member; Christ Episcopal School Board; Montgomery County Bar Association; and Montgomery’s Miracles.
He was listed in Best Lawyers in America®, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession. A listing in Best Lawyers is regarded by both clients and legal professionals as a significant honor.
Mr. McAuliffe earned a bachelor’s degree from Washington College and a juris doctor from the Washington College of Law at American University.
He lives in Potomac with his wife, Karyn. They are the proud parents of three daughters.
