Driver's Education
Montgomery College's Driving School is Maryland MVA licensed and certified. Our instructors are professional educators with over 20 years of experience teaching. We go the extra mile to teach safe, mindful and defensive driving techniques that diminish distractability. Our 36-hour course consists of 10 three-hour classroom sessions, and 3 two-hour individual behind-the-wheel driving sessions using our late model cars.

Montgomery College's Driver Education course is approved by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA).
The course consists of the required 30 hours of classroom instruction plus 6 hours Behind the Wheel. Successful completion of this driver education course is one of the requirements for obtaining a Maryland driver's license.

Students under 18 MUST be accompanied by a mentor (parent, guardian, etc.) to the first class/orientation session, and all students MUST bring their learner's permit to the first class/orientation session. Students will learn Montgomery College's driving school policies, which include mentor or parental involvement expectations, overview of Maryland's Graduated Licensing System and behind-the-wheel process. Important Notice: Starting Summer 2023, all Driver Education students must attend the first class. Makeups will not be allowed for the first class. If a student misses the first class, then they have to re-start the course at a later date.
This course provides the exact same MVA curriculum as SFT-123 Driver Education, but with built-in supports.
Montgomery College's Driving School and its instructors are Maryland MVA licensed and certified. Our additional support instructors are dually certified in Special Education. This course, in a small classroom environment, prepares rookie drivers to test for a Maryland driver’s license. Our 36-hour course consists of 10 three-hour classroom sessions, and 3 two-hour individual sessions using our own cars.
Students under 18 MUST be accompanied by a mentor (parent, guardian, etc.) to the first class/orientation session, and all students MUST bring their learner's permit to the first class/orientation session. Montgomery College educates mentors on how to manage the learning-to-drive experience through our mentor / parental involvement expectations, our 12 driver readiness indicators with self-assessments, and a collaborative approach between mentor and instructor(s).

Additional Supports include, but are not limited to:
- Differentiated instruction, supplemental aides and supports including a multi-sensory approach to learning.
- Behind the wheel is one-on-one instruction with a dually certified MVA and MSDE Special Education Educator
- Smaller class size
- Quizzes and tests are read aloud
- Extra time is granted to students for quizzes and tests
- Manipulatives (toy cars) are used to better explain situations
- A copy of all PowerPoints and instructor notes is provided to student

What should I do if I have a disability support request?
- Register for a class
- Call Natalie Martinez, Disability Support Services Counselor at 240-567-4118 or email natalie.martinez@montgomerycollege.edu at least four weeks prior to the start of class to arrange for accommodations and/or assistive technology. If this procedure is not followed, services may be delayed.
Please note that due to the nature of driver education, certain additional documentation may be requested.

Driver Improvement Lessons are for anyone who would like to improve their driving skills and/or gain more experience behind the wheel of a car. In order to enroll in Driver Improvement Lessons, you must have either had Driver Education or are currently enrolled in a Driver Education course here at MC, and you MUST have a current Learner's Permit or Driver's License.
Registration approval is required.

Important Information about Driver Education Courses:
All behind-the-wheel lessons begin and end at Rockville Campus. Please meet your instructor on time for lessons.
Be advised that while Driver Education schools are accomplished at making judgement
and sharing insight on driver skills, none are authorized to make determination or
prognosis on whether a rookie driver can or cannot drive on Maryland roads. The responsibility
lies with the parent/guardian and the state of Maryland on whether this student should
share Maryland roads. Participation in our Driver Education program is open to all
students. However, students with conditions identified by COMAR 11.17.03.02-1 "Reportable
Medical Conditions", must be reported to the MVA and Medical Advisory Board as instructed.

we can teach under those conditions identified by the MVA/Medical Advisory Board (MAB) .
Also be advised that during behind the wheel instruction, Montgomery College reserves
the right to stop the behind the wheel lesson if any student demonstrates safety concerns.
At this point, the student may be referred to screening to determine driver readiness.
