The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) today announced an educational grant of $2,500 for the Montgomery College Foundation to support the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs offered to Montgomery County’s young people. The College and PhRMA were joined by Delegate Bonnie Cullison, at an event in the state-of-the-art Health Sciences Center on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus.
Following the announcement, the representatives had the opportunity to observe the College’s Healthcare Heroes Camp and tour the building.
“STEM camps offered over the summer to middle and high school students across the county are designed to develop passions or increase interest in STEM programs," said Dr. Sanjay Rai, Montgomery College senior vice president for Academic Affairs. "These programs are vital to building a homegrown talent pipeline. These scholarships provide additional benefits to our middle and high school students and will help more students participate each summer."
PhRMA and Montgomery College partnered to bring this vital funding to local students. The Foundation will utilize the grant for several scholarships for young Montgomery County residents to attend one of the many STEM camps the College offers throughout the summer.
“Our educational institutions are training the next generation for the jobs of the future through STEM education. Health care and life sciences are some of the most prominent and important careers available. It’s a growing sector that will ensure that our health care professionals have the tools they need to treat and cure devastating illnesses,” said Montgomery County Delegate Cullison.
“PhRMA represents the country’s top biopharmaceutical research companies that allow the United States to be a leader in innovation, particularly in the fight to combat COVID-19. Programs like this are an excellent way for students to develop an interest in STEM careers. PhRMA is proud to support Montgomery College and their commitment to offering students quality STEM education opportunities,” said Stami Williams, PhRMA.
