Montgomery College is hosting a Nobel laureate speaker series, featuring Dr. John C. Mather and Dr. William D. Phillips, October 23 and November 6, as the first two speakers.
On Monday, October 23, at 2 p.m. in Globe Hall on the Germantown Campus, the College welcomes Dr. Mather, the recipient of the 2006 Nobel Prize in physics. Dr. Mather will deliver a presentation called, "Opening the Infrared Treasure Chest with the James Webb Space Telescope," and show how he and his team built the Webb and explain what they hope to find.
Though Dr. Mather's prize-winning research provided crucial evidence for the Big Bang theory and significantly advanced our understanding of the universe's origin and evolution, this presentation is intended for a general audience.
On Monday, November 6, at 3 p.m., also in Globe Hall on the Germantown Campus, the College welcomes Dr. Phillips, the recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize in physics. Dr. Phillips will deliver a presentation called, “How We Measure Up: the revolutionary changes to the way science measures almost everything.”
While Dr. Phillips’ discovery of laser cooling and trapping of atoms revolutionized atomic physics and opened many doors to applications in precision measurements and emerging quantum technologies, the presentation is intended for a general audience.
The events are free and open to the public, and a light reception will follow the talk.
