New Education Center to Serve East County Residents

Montgomery College plans to open a 55,000-square-foot education center to serve as an anchor institution in east Montgomery County.

The MC East County Education Center, located off Route 29 at 2221 Broadbirch Drive in Silver Spring, will open to students in the fall of 2023, the College announced at press conference Nov. 2.

Guided by the vision and support of the county executive and county council, the center will feature classrooms, training labs, and student advising space, and will offer credit and noncredit courses. MC expects to serve more than 1,000 students there in the first year.

Classes offered at the center will be ones that target skill gaps in key industry sectors such as health care and information technology. Programmatic highlights include:

  • Small Business/Entrepreneurship
  • Cybersecurity/IT
  • Allied Healthcare classes
  • Early Childhood Education
  • English for speakers of other languages (ESL)
  • General Education (credit courses)

The center will also house Raptor Central, the student support services one-stop shop for admissions and enrollment.

Montgomery College currently has three campuses (Germantown, Rockville, Takoma Park/Silver Spring) and two training centers in Gaithersburg and Wheaton. The ECEC will be the largest of the College’s three centers. The Center will bring the College’s unique services and academic programs to the residents of the East County to expand access in this underserved region and to serve as an anchor institution in the community.

Montgomery College President Jermaine F. Williams, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, County Council President Gabe Albornoz, together with community and civic leaders, including Dr. Anthony Stahl, president of Adventist Health Care White Oak Medical Center, shared their thoughts and visions for the new center during the Nov. 2 event.

"Montgomery College has had a presence in the East County since 2015, when we established a community engagement center inside the East County Regional Service Center on Briggs Chaney Road," said MC President Williams. "[Since 2015] the College has served thousands of people seeking training and job skills. These individuals have been empowered to take advantage of classes and learning opportunities –many of them free, such as English classes and computer trainings—that have improved their earning potential. Now it’s time to expand those opportunities and we can do so with the help of everyone here today.”
