Important Notice Regarding the Maryland State Retirement System
- Upon acceptance of any benefits-eligible position at Montgomery College, newly hired employees must make an irrevocable decision to enroll in the Maryland State Retirement System (Pension or Optional Retirement Plan) on or before the date of hire per state law.
- If a newly hired employee was previously employed by the State of Maryland or other participating entity, then they must enroll in the same Maryland State Retirement System plan at Montgomery College as they were previously enrolled in (Pension or Optional Retirement Plan) per state law. Not doing so could result in penalties.
- If a newly hired employee is already retired from the Maryland State Retirement System (Pension or Optional Retirement Plan), they may not re-enroll in either plan while employed at Montgomery College per state law.
- If a newly hired employee is already retired from the Maryland State Retirement System (Pension or Optional Retirement Plan), they may have a limit on how much money they can earn if selected for any job at Montgomery College. It is the employee’s responsibility to notify the State if they become re-employed, and to keep track of any earnings limitation that they may be subject to.
